Frequently asked questions
What is a 3D/4D elective ultrasound?
3D/4D elective ultrasounds are non-medical ultrasounds that provide expectant parents with more detailed and realistic images of their baby in utero. Unlike traditional 2D ultrasounds, which show flat, black and white images, 3D ultrasounds create a three-dimensional image, while 4D ultrasounds add the element of movement, allowing parents to see their baby's actions in real-time.
Are 3D/4D ultrasounds safe for the baby?
Yes, 3D/4D ultrasounds are considered safe for both the baby and the expectant mother. These ultrasounds use the same technology as traditional ultrasounds but provide more advanced imaging capabilities. However, it is essential to ensure that the person performing the ultrasound is a trained professional who follows guidelines and protocols to ensure the safety and well-being of both the mother and the baby.
How early can you have a 3D/4D elective ultrasound?
At our studio, you can schedule an elective 3D ultrasound at any point during your pregnancy, whether in the first, second, or third trimester. Many families choose to come in early to bond with their growing baby and watch their progress over time.
However, if you would like to see the baby's facial features in the most detail, we recommend booking your 3D/4D/5D ultrasound between 28 and 33 weeks. During this window, your baby has developed fuller features, and there is usually enough amniotic fluid for the clearest images.
Staying well-hydrated during this period is also very important to help achieve the best possible clarity, since good hydration can improve the quality of your ultrasound.
Does insurance cover the cost of 3D/4D elective ultrasounds?
In most cases, insurance policies do not cover the cost of 3D/4D elective ultrasounds since they are considered non-medical procedures. These ultrasounds are typically performed at private clinics or specialty centers, and the cost can vary depending on the location and additional services offered. However, it is always best to check with your insurance provider to confirm their specific coverage policies.
When should I drink water for my 3D/4D ultrasound?
Pregnant women are advised to drink an adequate amount of water before their 3D/4D ultrasound appointments to improve the quality of the images. Staying hydrated helps maintain the appropriate levels of amniotic fluid, resulting in clearer and more detailed ultrasound images.
How can I prepare for the best 3D/4D/5D ultrasound images?
For the best 3D/4D/5D ultrasound images, we recommend staying well hydrated in the days leading up to your appointment. Drinking water daily can help improve amniotic fluid around baby’s face, which may lead to clearer images. On the day of your appointment, try not to arrive on a completely empty stomach. Some families find that having a light snack or juice before the scan helps encourage baby to move if needed. Image quality can also depend on baby’s position, placenta location, fluid level, and stage of pregnancy.
What is the best week of pregnancy for a 3D/4D ultrasound?
The best time for a 3D/4D/5D ultrasound is usually between 28 and 32 weeks for detailed facial images. Earlier in pregnancy, especially before 20 weeks, we’re often able to capture more of baby’s full body. Every pregnancy is different, and image quality can depend on baby’s position, placenta placement, fluid level, and maternal body type.
Can I bring family or guests to my appointment?
Yes. Serenity Imaging welcomes family and loved ones to share in the experience. We currently include up to 6 guests, and larger groups may be accommodated depending on the appointment and package. If you plan to bring a larger group, please contact us ahead of time so we can help you choose the best option.
How do I choose the best ultrasound package for my pregnancy?
The best package depends on how far along you are and what type of experience you’re hoping for. Some families book early for reassurance, heartbeat recordings, or early bonding, while others wait until later in pregnancy for detailed 3D/4D/5D facial images. If you’re not sure which package is best, Serenity Imaging is happy to guide you based on your gestational age and what you’d like to see during your visit.
